Spanish missions along the California coast were known at the time as which region?

The coastal missions were part of Alta California, a term the Spanish used to designate the northern or “upper” portion of California, in contrast to Baja California on the southern peninsula. “Alta” means upper, so this name reflects the geographic orientation from the Spanish viewpoint. The missions located along the coast fell within this northern region, not within Baja California or any other designation, making Alta California the correct label for that era.
